Department loses percussion instructor

Some people march to a different drum; others teach the drummers to a different beat. Dr. Jeremy Kushner, director of percussion studies, died Oct. 8 after suffering a heart attack. He was 35 years old. Kushner came to Missouri Southern three and a half years ago.

University signs contract to upgrade old software

On Sept. 23, the Board of Governors approved a $3.4 million contract with SunGuard SCT Banner. Soon after, the contract was signed. Dr. Terri Agee, vice president for business affairs, said for two days each, two vendors who had submitted proposals dealing with the administrative software systems came to Missouri Southern.

Facebook craze sweeps campus computers

It was referred to not only as an addiction, but a disease by The Collegiate Times. Facebook is an online directory connecting students through schools across the country. When people join Facebook.com, they are not just joining one large social network, he or she is affiliating with a specific branch of the site that includes other students specifically from a certain school.

Department works to welcome freshmen

One department is working to keep retention rates up. The criminal justice department has implemented a process to make freshmen students feel welcome and willing to stay. It is also is helping students make friends in the department. "If you make a friend, it makes an easier adjustment for you," said Richard Spencer, assistant professor of criminal justice.

Magazine seeks to separate art from literature in publications

With a new plan, the staff of the literary magazine The Winged Lion are looking for ways to improve. The magazine has operated by including both written and artistic submissions from students in the past. However, certain changes are being proposed to separate the visual art and written compositions into two separate magazines.

Activities for Shoctober continue

It is now mid-October, which means Shocktober events and activities are already up and running. Throughout the month of October, the Campus Activities Board sponsors many different October-related activities. If students have missed the first two Shocktober events, they don't need to worry, there are several events to come.

Criminal justice brings back one of its own

1993 graduate returns as assistant professor

Accepting a faculty position in the criminal justice department at Missouri Southern was, "a dream come true", for one instructor. "I always knew teaching here was what I wanted to do, but I thought it would come later in my career," said Greg Dagnan, assistant professor of criminal justice.

Secretary looks toward future

Motherhood helped prepare the new honors program secretary for her position at Missouri Southern this fall. Ursula Tresvan, honors program secretary, joined the staff at Southern after a year away from school due to the birth of her daughter, Sophia. "[Sophia's birth] made me rearrange my life a little bit," Tresvan said.
