Sen. Gary Nodler (R-Joplin) wants to change higher education in Missouri and he wants to do it quickly. College presidents from around the state came to Nodler's side as he presented his omnibus higher education bill to the Senate education committee Wednesday.
At the age of 17, Julio León left his Chilean home in a northern port city called Iquique. This summer, he will celebrate 25 years as Missouri Southern's president. As the dean of the school of business in 1982, León helped in the search for a new president.
The traveling exhibit, "Mapping Missouri," will be on the third floor of Spiva Library through March 4. The collection displays more than 100 maps courtesy of the Missouri state archives, some of which have never been previously displayed. The exhibit originally was scheduled to be in the Powers Museum in Carthage.
Missouri Southern didn't have to travel far to find a valuable commodity: land. University President Julio León recently announced the acquisition of two properties that he hopes will aid in the continuing mission of the University. "From the very beginning, when the University moved to this place, the institution has acquired property for future development," he said.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of America Inc. will host Bowl for Kids [time] March 3 [place] to raise money for its local programs. Flyers inviting student groups to participate in the bowl-a-thon were distributed across campus earlier this month and a few students signed up.
Dr. Willie Edwards, assistant professor of teacher education, took a trip to Karachi, Pakistan Dec. 2-14. The trip was to help teach educational curricula to the faculty at Aga Khan University. A country with a population of 166 million people, Pakistan is located in southern Asia, located next to the Arabian Sea and bordering Afghanistan, Iran and China to the north.
His name is Earl. Earl Goddard, the new security patrolman at Missouri Southern, has been serving the Joplin area for more than 40 years. He retired from the Joplin Central Fire Department after 41 years in 1995. Earl was born and raised in Dueneweg. Mo.
Students returning their rentals books last semester may have wondered about the dust and drywall in the basement of Billingsly Student Center. Now, a new office fills the corner across from the bookstore. Armed with a new grant, four offices, a bank of 10 computers and an optimistic outlook, the staff inside the new Educational Talent Search offices hope to make college possible for local secondary students.
The Campus Activities Board voted to bring the band Cross Canadian Ragweed to Missouri Southern for an outdoor concert April 18. The ticket price is undecided but CAB members plan to set aside a block of free or discounted tickets for Southern students. The CAB expects a big turnout.
