Board seats remain open, await appointments

They're waiting on an answer. The Board of Governors for Missouri Southern currently has two members in expired seats, and another seat has been open since January. Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon is responsible for nominating or reappointing someone to the seat, and that person is then up for confirmation by the senate.

The Clinical Policy on Dress for Missouri Southern's nursing program has many students upset - specifically, the section about tattoos. The Clinical Policy on Dress includes things like uniforms, name badges, hair - including facial, perfumes, piercings and, of course, tattoos/body art.

Nixon calls for no hike in tuition

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Tuition and academic fees will be frozen for the second straight year at Missouri's public four-year colleges and universities, Gov. Jay Nixon announced Tuesday. Nixon said he will have to reduce higher education spending by 5.2 percent, or $42 million, for the next fiscal year.

Catalog to change in 2010

Missouri Southern's general education requirements have changed, resulting in fewer required hours and more flexibility with general requirements. "It's finalized in terms of its structure," said Dr. Brad Kleindl, interim vice president of academic affairs.

VPAA search fails, University officials unsure what's next

The search for Southern's next vice president for academic affairs is in limbo. The search was declared a failure Monday after a second (of three) finalists withdrew from consideration for the position. Dr. Peter Johnstone, the deputy vice chancellor for the University of North Texas in Dallas, reportedly informed University President Bruce Speck of his decision last week.

Former Foundation director Curt Betebenner passes away

Missouri Southern lost a friend and cherished worker this past week. Curtis Betebenner, director of the Missouri Southern Foundation from 1999 to Sept. 30, 2009, passed away Nov. 13. He was 57. "He really, really loved Missouri Southern," said Sharon Fraser, secretary to the vice president of development.

Speck addresses Student Senate about budget, faculty vote

During the Nov. 11 Student Senate meeting, University President Bruce Speck spoke and addressed issues brought up by the senators such as budget cuts, scholarship funds, Southern's future plans and plans for KCUMB's medical school on campus. "We suspect we're going to take at least a 5 percent hit this year, the fiscal '11 budget year, and the fiscal '12 budget year," Speck said regarding budget cuts.

Student faces serious charges

A Missouri Southern student has been charged with sex crimes involving a 14-year-old girl and was arrested and taken into custody on Nov. 5. Colby Williams, senior mass communication major, has since been released. A document filed by Chief United States Magistrate Judge James England claims Williams engaged in the crime sometime between January and May 2007.

Even though last year's cut to the international studies budget has made it more expensive to study abroad, students have not lost interest in the program. "Our students still want the international exposure and we're still giving it to them," said Stephanie Goad, international student adviser.
