Go and get some tongue

I often get tired of the same Americanized restaurant on every street in town. Even when I venture away from fast food, there are only so many Chinese buffets and Tex-Mex menu items. So when I see a place looking like the FDA let it slide this year, I have to go inside and order the most creative feature on the menu.

Lalo's Taqueria is on the corner of Seventh and Brownell, and with only eight tables inside and a small gravel parking lot, it is anything but impressive. This is the freshest and most authentic Mexican cuisine for miles. If you are naturally skeptical, you will first notice that the menu offers unfamiliar foods. I urge you: go for it.

Possibly the best sandwich I have ever had is the torta de lengua. A fresh avocado, along with lettuce, tomatoes and onions, rest between freshly baked Mexican buns. The best part, though, is the layers of refried beans, mayonnaise and the crown jewel: lengua. In English, lengua means tongue.

I know it sounds gross, but get passed the initial cringe, hike up your pants and give it the 'ole college try. With fresh jalapeños and the most delicious homemade salsa on the side, there are really no excuses.

The torta de lengua gets my highest rating and pick as the best sandwich in town, but even if there is no adventure in you, Lalo's Taqueria still offers some fine grub. Give it a try this weekend.
