Members of the Missouri Southern Board of Governors said tonight they hope the school will move forward after an overwhelming vote of no confidence in University President Bruce Speck was delivered today, and reiterated that Speck remains under contract with the school.

A faculty vote on confidence in Speck's presidency resulted in 140 votes of no confidence and only 44 votes in support of the president. The results were announced at the conclusion of Monday's Faculty Senate meeting.

Board President Rod Anderson said after a budget and audit committee meeting he was staying on a positive note, and added that he had seen improvement in the relationship between Speck and faculty.

"Right now, the president is under contract," Anderson said.

"We want to see the faculty and the president see some of these avenues bridged and go forward and then we'll duly evaluate at the appropriate time," he added.

Board member Dwight Douglas said the Governors would continue addressing faculty concerns, unless the Board decided to go in a different direction.

"I hope the faculty will display an open mind and an open receptiveness as we address the problems between the administration and faculty and I think we will continue along that road at least until the Board makes some other determination," Douglas said.

"I mean, the Board's ultimately going to have to give direction," Douglas added. "Right now Dr. Speck is clearly under a contract till the summer of 2011. That's not going to change, that contract is there and in existence."

Nancy Perry said the situation was moving in the right direction, even though the vote was "unfortunate," and that she appreciated the faculty sending a message to the Board.

"I think as a Board member, the Board needs to get together and have some discussions, see what direction we go from here and they (faculty) have certainly sent a message to us," Perry said. "I appreciate them doing that."
