For Kappa Sigma's second swing-a-thon, members of the fraternity spent 48 hours on a swing set in the oval to raise money for Children's Haven Nov. 12-13.

"We raised over $600 in funds to be donated to Children's Haven," said Will Lynch, president of Kappa Sigma. "We had almost every single Kappa Sigma on campus come out to the event to swing putting our participation around 25 members, which really shows how much of a group effort this was."

The swing was hand built with donated materials from Home Depot. Other sponsors included Jivin' Java with a donation of 40 liters of coffee, Krispy Cream with a donation of 25 dozen doughnuts and both of which donated items to sell, and Monster Energy Drink donated the Swing-a-thon banner.

Kappa Sigma chose to donate to Children's Haven this year because they had done it before and like the work Children's Haven does.

"Kappa Sigma was raising money for Children's Haven, which is a local organization that helps care for children of families in need," said Darrell Sour, member of Kappa Sigma. "If a family loses their home to a tornado or fire, a parent is put in the hospital, etc. It functions like the Ronald McDonald house, but is more child-centered."

"I've helped out with our swing-a-thon & teeter-totter-a-thon events in previous years. The events are always 48-hour long marathons. This year I only stuck around for 22 hours. I slept on the swings overnight…and I loved it! It's been a difficult semester for me, and this was like a very welcome reprieve from classes."

This year Kappa Sigma could did donate the swing to Children's Haven because they already had a full playground, which included a swing set.

"The boys and I had fun," said Chris Hernandez, organizer of the swing-a-thon. "This is much bigger than us. We just thought it would be a great thing for the community to realize what they mean to Kappa Sigma."
