In the past few months, we've had two religious radicals visit our campus yelling insults at students without provocation. As a Christian myself, watching other Christians act this way is disgusting.

Brother Matt, wearing a dress shirt, tie and baseball cap ensemble, yelled words such as "slut," "liar" and "whore" at students last Sept. just for walking by, many times targeting them because of what they were wearing. He called nearly everyone who walked by a sinner and said they were going to burn in hell.

Matt, how do you think you're going to convert anyone to Christianity if you go around to colleges yelling insults at people without even knowing anything about them? You won't convince us that God's done anything for you if you can't show any of His love in your preaching. You gave me the vibe that you're just out there trying to make as many students mad as possible. We already have Nathan Mills for that.

Brother Jed, the ex-hippie who used bigger words but was still as rude, stopped by last month. He calls his methods "confrontational evangelism." He carried around a sign targeting specific groups of people, like "hypocrites" and "lesbians."

Yes, I believe homosexuality is wrong, but I don't go around yelling insulting words like that at people and call it evangelism.

Listen, Jed. People aren't going to hell because they simply are, as your sign says, a "dope fiend," "socialist" or "porn freak." If we're reading the same Bible, you'd know it says someone must accept what Jesus did on the cross for their sins to escape hell. It's not the specific sins that separate a person from God, it's that people are sinners.

Throwing random words on a sign that only exist to inflame the readers isn't evangelism, but it is confrontational. If you really want to win people over for God, get to know them as individuals instead of using blind judgment. Don't preach hate, but show love.
