Wednesday, the Missouri Southern football team added 26 names to it's roster for the 2010 season.
Head Coach Bart Tatum and his staff signed 25 high school recruits and one junior college player on national signing day.
"I believe we met our needs," Tatum said. "We had a strong need at defensive end, needed to pick up a couple of really good young offensive linemen which I believe we did.
"We've got a good nucleus of fast, young players, and I believe this signing class is going to solidify our speed and quickness as a team."
To fill their need at the defensive end position, the Lions brought in Beau Bounous, a 6-foot-6-inch Monett, Mo., product who currently has the record for tackles for a loss in Missouri.
Matt Larson is one of the recruits Tatum brought in to shore up the offensive line, at 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, Larson was an All-State, All-Metro and All-Northeast selection at Winnetonka High School in Gladstone, Mo.
Tatum's 2010 recruiting class features a mixture of Missouri players with more than a few names reaching outside the state as far as Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Grand Prarie, Texas.
"We went back down and got a player or two from Texas," Tatum said. "And we nabbed a couple of really good prospects out of Arkansas and then did really well in Missouri. Got a kid out of Florida again. So again, athletically we feel like these young men stack up really well."
Tatum's staff also managed to sign two local players, adding tight end/linebacker Bart Starkey and running back/linebacker Braxton Backer, both from Webb City High School.
"We'll recruit the heck out of a local kid if he's close to as talented as other people at those positions," Tatum said. "Because it's good for the program and it's good for football in this area. So we're going to recruit local high schools as long as I'm the head coach here. And we're going to get a good flavor of local talent each and every year, and I think we've done that again."
